Mudslide wipes out Clermont home

Posted: Updated:

Two families are out of their homes this evening after a mudslide in Clermont wiped out a home on Sunnyside Drive.  The property manager is calling it a total loss. Harvey Rosenburg gave us his thoughts as he first surveyed the damage.

"Why me? But yeah it's a complete loss," he said.  "We're going to have to jump through a lot of hurdles over the next couple of days, and we're probably looking at 3 to 6 months to rehab both units."

On one side of the 1,100 square foot duplex, mud rises so high that it comes up to the toilet in both bathrooms, and in the master bedroom there are places where your head will touch the 8 foot high ceiling just standing on top of the mud.  Renter Myriam Suarez described her last 24 hours for us.

"Hell!" she said.

Suarez was in the middle of loading all of the family's belongings that were left into a UHaul with their future uncertain.

"You never think that something like that is going to happen to you, just like probably everybody else. You never think that you're going to have such a thing like this."

The damage happened at about 9:30 Tuesday night after more than 3 inches of rain in the Clermont area. The home sits at the bottom of an embankment where State Road 50 goes by above the home. The rains flooded the drainage ponds designed to hold water, and water and mud came flooding over that embankment into the home, busting out the rear bedroom window, and sending water and mud cascading in. When Myriam Suarez got home, she could not push the door open, so she asked her neighbor to help.

"As soon as he opened it up, it was like a river going down the driveway our shoes and all of our things underwater."

The Suarez family does not have renters insurance, and Myriam is not sure what will happen next. Still, she was surprisingly resilient.

"What are you going to do? I mean it could have been worse you know? I usually go to bed at 10 o'clock and where the water came through is by my bed, so it could have been worse. I'm, I'm, I'm blessed. I'm glad that things worked like this. I mean. Things you can get it two, three months, but your life you can never get it back."

The owners of the home are putting the two families that used to live in those units in a hotel room for tonight.
