School board upholds ban on strapless dresses at dance

Posted: Updated:

Justin Timberlake coined the phrase "wardrobe malfunction" after his mishap dancing with Janet Jackson in the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show.

Fear of a "possible" wardrobe malfunction motivated the Readington Township school principal to ban strapless dresses for the upcoming eighth grade dance. The ban stirred up anger among some parents and students because one of the other reasons given was that strapless dresses would be a "distraction" for boys.

Parents called the policy sexist. Some complained they had already bought a dress.

The school board scheduled a special meeting Wednesday night to hear from parents, who sounded off.

After more than an hour of discussion by many on the school board who by their own admission knew very little if anything about dresses designed for teenage girls, the board voted three times. Finally, the board voted to uphold the ban on strapless dresses just for this school year.
