Massive fire in the Bronx

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A massive fire that erupted in the Wakefield section of the Bronx Thursday injured 10 firefighters and destroyed several buildings, said fire officials. Late Thursday, that fire apparently restarted, officials said.

SkyFoxHD was over the scene where large plumes of smoke covered the area around the Wakefield train station and extended for several miles.

The flames spread to neighboring buildings including several businesses along White Plains Road.

The fire which broke out inside a garage was brought under control just before 10 a.m., said fire officials. But in the evening the fire rekindled.

Ten firefighters suffered minor injuries and a pedestrian was treated for smoke inhalation, reported the AP.

The no. 2 and no. 5 trains were bypassing the 225th Station. Earlier on Thursday, trains were skipping stops between Gun Hill Road and 241st St.

The MTA advised customers to use the Bx39 bus which was making nearby stops.

Due to fire department activity in the area, students at P.S. 21 at 715 East 225th St. were relocated to I.S. 287 at 3710 Barnes Ave.

It is not clear what sparked the inferno.

While a thousand people streamed into a courtyard at St. Lucy Parish in the Bronx to watch a reenactment of the crucifixion of Christ, next door a steady trickle of believers quietly collected water from that church's grotto, taking the liquid home to heal, cure, and bless.

From the Holy Land to the streets of New York City, Christians have commemorated the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in Good Friday prayers and processions. Thousands of Christian pilgrims filled the cobblestone alleyways of the Old City on Friday along the Via Dolorosa, Latin for the "Way of Suffering." In NYC, Timothy Cardinal Dolan and Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio lead followers across the Brooklyn Bridge.
