Workers ordered to pay $5,000 each in restitution

Updated:

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Two former Tucson transportation workers have been ordered to repay a fraction of what they're accused of stealing from the city.

The Arizona Daily Star reports Robert Palomarez and Kurt Hough pleaded guilty to theft in Pima County Superior Court on Thursday.

They were ordered to each pay $5,000 in restitution and $1,000 to a state anti-racketeering fund. An indictment accuses them of using nearly $100,000 worth of city resources for private projects.

The newspaper reports Hough was on also paid leave for 11 months of the investigation, collecting more than $65,000.

City Councilman Steve Kozachik called the decision a "lousy deal." Mayor Jonathan Rothschild said it was up to the court to dole out the punishment.

Palomarez and Hough were among five transportation supervisors and workers who resigned or were fired last September in the scandal.
