Participants stopped at Binson's Home Health Care in Livonia Saturday to prepare for the 22nd annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Detroit.

"These are hundreds of people who believe one person can make a difference," said Mo Keenan Meldrum, a breast cancer survivor who chairs the race. "They're packing up for 500 teams that will be coming to the Race for the Cure on May 18 at Comerica Park."

As we've seen in years past, there are plenty of colorful and comical team names -- and passionate team members to go with them.

"You will see so many funny names and funny T-shirts," Keenan Meldrum said. "People finding a way to laugh about something that just breaks our hearts too often."

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. About 1.6 million new cases were reported in 2010. The exact cause is not known and currently there is no cure. That's why the walkers and runners raise awareness and money. 75 percent of proceeds from Race for the Cure support screening, treatment and education programs in Metro Detroit. The rest of the money helps fund breast cancer research.

There's still time to sign up. Participants can even sign up the morning of the race.
