CYCLING SAFETY: Transportation bill may keep cars out of bike lanes

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

Now that outdoor activities can finally commence, many Minnesotans are getting back on their bicycles -- and lawmakers are trying to make sure that they can share the roads safely across the state.

The Department of Transportation was held their second annual Midwest Regional Bike Safety Summit two weeks ago, and many ideas on how to improve safety were shared -- but Chris Farmer-Lies, a member of the Minneapolis Bike Coalition, says this time of year is always a tough time as drivers get reacquainted with sharing the roadways and bikers get back into their good habits.

"It's basic safety stuff like wearing a helmet, wearing lights and reflective clothing if you have it," he said. "This is also a great time to tune up your bike."

Meanwhile, lawmakers at the state capitol are working on a transportation policy bill in conference committee that touches on bike safety. The measure would ban cars from parking in bike lanes or using them to pass other cars, and it would also require drivers to use turn signals when crossing bike lanes.

The bike-friendly tune-up stations are also now in place on the Greenway, along Lake of the Isles and at the Wellstone Center in St. Paul.
