City youth conquer the river with the Chicago Rowing Foundation

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Chicago Rowing Foundation showed Good Day how they're inspiring kids to get active, make friends and appreciate nature in the heart of the city.

The organization was founded in 1998 through a U.S. Olympic Committee grant and has grown immensely in the last 15 years.

From their boathouse located on the north branch of the Chicago River, they launch 100 children into the water every day in these long rowboats, giving them a chance to make friends, exercise consistently and grow to love the sport while navigating the river.

Chicago Rowing represents 45 different schools across the city, both public and private. Learning to row well can also lead to scholarship opportunities when the time comes for these students to go to college.

"Of all the kids that have graduated from our program, 100% have gone to college," Chicago Rowing Foundation representative Betsy said. "Thirty percent have gotten rowing scholarships."

The foundation offers programs for adults as well.

"We have anything from a middle school program for our 7th, 8th graders to a summer program for 6th graders," Betsy said. "We also have a masters team for adults who want to row later in life."

There is also a learn-to-row program for any adult looking to get into something new, where they are taught everything they need to know. The next session starts in June.
