Mother's Day gift ideas

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Mother's Day is this weekend. Instead of the usual Mother's Day fare, here are some unique gift ideas for around 100 bucks.

"Our moms do everything for us, so this is the time of year that we get to celebrate them and give them something special," says gift expert Rachel Shechtman, who owns Story Boutique in Chelsea. "What we love doing at Story is finding things that are functional and beautiful, but are a little different."

In lieu of a traditional bouquet, mom may prefer a plant growing device called Click to Grow. Just add batteries, fill the water tank and smart technology takes over.

"She's busy at work, or she's traveling, or multi-tasking and doing so many things," Shechtman says. "It's a great way not to give up your green thumb."

What busy mom can resist a versatile little black dress? For about $90, mom can take this Norma Kamali frock from day to night.

"She can dress it up, she can dress it down, she can put leggings on, she could put heels, and it also works for all body types," Shechtman says.

What better accessory for that little black dress than the hidden message necklace by Beth Macri?

"As you can see on my neck, it's a pretty necklace and you'll say, oh that's a nice necklace," Shechtman says. "Then when you flip it up you realize it says something. This one says 'love mom.'"

If jewelry isn't her thing, mom can indulge her sweet tooth with these designer chocolates, imported daily from France.

"There's a range of amazing different flavor inside of each one, so some are green tea, and some are mango, and then you have more the traditional flavors, like hazelnut and dark chocolate," Shechtman says.

But no matter the flavor, they won't be sweeter than mom.

Four years ago, tablet owners starting raving about the market's newest piece of mobile technology. Last quarter, Apple iPad sales fell by 9 percent. Still, forecasting the death of the tablet seems premature and incorrect. More likely, all our devices are cross-breeding and evolving until all our calling, emailing, texting, messaging, Internetting, TV watching, all our communication happens on one mobile gadget.

If an iced coffee from Dunkin' Donuts is part of your afternoon routine, expect a nudge to buy a cookie or doughnut you didn't plan on. Dunkin' Brands CEO Nigel Travis said in a phone interview Thursday that the company is pushing to get its cashiers to "upsell" to afternoon customers. It's part of an effort to increase sales after stores have emptied out after the morning rush.
