Detroiter: Hole left after home torn down now a 'dumping site'

DETROIT (WJBK) -

We first met Vanessa McLittle a couple of years ago when the abandoned home next door to her on Vaughan became a dumping ground.

We saw her again at the end of February. The house had been torn down, but a huge hole was left in its place. In fact, her neighborhood was full of holes where abandoned homes once stood. They had been that way for weeks.

The city promised to have them filled in within a month. That would have been March, but now it is May, and it seems things have come full circle.

"There's somebody's ball down there now," McLittle said. "Some folks have come and just dumped furniture in there. It's a dumping site now."

A contractor did fill in two holes, but the one next to McLittle is just getting worse. Her driveway is starting to give way. People are throwing furniture and other trash in the hole. A basketball is proof that kids have been near there. It is not just unsightly, but dangerous.

"When are you going to clean up your mess? You created it. Now clean it up," McLittle said.

We contacted the city. They told us they are trying to fill the holes in a timely manner. As of last week, a spokesperson for Mayor Bing said 7,075 blighted properties had been torn down since 2010. The goal is a total of 10,000 by the end of this year.

McLittle's goal is more modest. She just wants the hole filled by the time she moves out at the end of the month.

Since we were last in this neighborhood, a family in one of the homes has left, in part, because of the mess next door. It simply wasn't safe for her children.

Fortunately for those that haven't left, this should soon be fixed. The city told us the contractor will be on site on Friday.
