2 bodies found after NJ standoff; suspect killed

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

After more than a day and a half, a hostage standoff in South Trenton, New Jersey came to a violent end early Sunday morning.

Police stormed the home where a man was holding children captive in a room and what police discovered when they entered the house was very disturbing. They found the bodies of a woman and her 13-year-old son inside.

Police shot and killed a registered sex offender, 38-year-old Gerald "Skip" Tyron, who is accused of taking his girlfriend's three children hostage.

"During this whole incident the welfare of the children who were being held hostage was of paramount concern," said Col. Rick Fuentes of the New Jersey State Police.

The standoff began Friday afternoon when police entered the home of 44-year-old Carmelita Stevens after a relative said she hadn't heard from her in weeks.

"When officers did not receive a response at the door and fearing for the safety of the family the made a forced entry into the home through a rear door and immediately smelled an odor consistent with a decomposing body," said Ralph Rivera, Director of the Trenton State Police.

Authorities say they found Murphy in an upstairs bedroom and he told them he was armed with a gun and explosives and that he had three children with him.

Police were able to rescue Stevens' 19-year-old son from the basement but investigators say Murphy held three others hostage for 37 hours.

Authorities kept in contact with Murphy until making the decision to finally storm the house around 3:45 a.m.

Police say Murphy was shot because he was threatening one of the kids.

"We did have evidence that there was a deteriorating state-of-mind here on the part of the subject and we felt that within the next 24 hours he was going take some kind of action and we needed to interrupt that," said Col. Rick Fuentes.

Authorities say the hostages, an 18-year-old girl, 16-year-old boy and 4-year-old boy, had been abused and assaulted – but were rescued.

The bodies of Stevens and her 13-year-old son were then found. A friend of Murphy's believes he may have just snapped.

"He was a nice guy, you know? A little, I would say touched or off a little bit -- but you can tell he wasn't normal."

According to police, Murphy had a lengthy criminal history. He was convicted of aggravated assault and criminal conspiracy and was also previously arrested for robbery, weapons offenses and child endangerment.

Police say Murphy and Stevens had only been dating for a few months.

The investigation is still ongoing and police are looking for a possible motive.
