Three young children were critically injured and a man was killed in a head-on crash Sunday morning in Poinciana, deputies said. Two others were injured.
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, a black 2002 Dodge Neon heading east on Cypress Parkway crossed the center line just west of Laurel Avenue at about 10:45 a.m.
The Neon, driven by Cassandra Beniquez, 23, of St. Cloud, struck a westbound red 2008 Suzuki SX4 driven by Ricardo Ortiz, 30, of Kissimmee.
The front passenger in the Neon, Ezequiel Velazquez, 19, of Kissimmee, was killed. He was not wearing a seat belt, the Sheriff's Office said.
Three children in the back seat were taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando in critical condition: Giselle Carattini, 6; Gissiah Carattini, 4; and Isaiah Martinez, 2. All were wearing seat belts or were in a car seat.
Beniquez, the driver of the Neon, was taken to Osceola Regional Medical Center in stable condition. It's not yet known whether she was wearing a seat belt.
Ortiz, who was wearing a seat belt, was treated and released from Osceola Regional.
The investigation is ongoing, and charges are pending, deputies said.
