It can be painful waiting in line for a Starbucks brew, just ask 38-year-old Aime Peterson.
She was shot just above her left knee Saturday inside the one in the Tyrone Square Mall.
"It sounded like a balloon pop," said Samantha Montgomery.
Montgomery works just across from the coffee shop. She said it was busy and folks were in shock when they realized a gun had just gone off.
"No one really knew what was going on until the lady had blood dripping down from her leg," she said.
Turns out this shooting was an accident. The gun owner, Pamela Beck, is friends with Peterson. Police say she had forgotten the gun was in her purse.
As she was paying, she dropped the bag to the floor and the small caliber pistol went off into her friends leg.
"Technically, she's broken the law. Carrying a concealed firearm is a 3rd degree felony. She, in fact, could be criminally charged in this case," said Mike Puetz with the St. Pete Police Department.
Beck doesn't have a concealed weapons permit, so the state attorney's office will review the case and decide whether or not to charge her.
Her friend was treated and released from the hospital that night. They live only a few minutes apart. Fortunately, the bullet didn't hit anyone else.
"There was a whole line of people; it could've ricocheted on the ground and hit anybody," Montgomergy said.
"To me, it was a pretty careless act," she added.
