Central Florida's first breast milk depot to open today
In a first of its kind for Central Florida, a milk depot is set to open Tuesday, where new mothers can donate breast milk for other infants.
Florida Hospital's breast milk depot will freeze and ship the donated milk to a bank in Denver for distribution to the nation's most at-risk babies, according to the Orlando Sentinel. Premature babies will take priority.
The Academy of Pediatrics recommends that breast milk be fed to premature infants, even when a mother's own milk cannot be used.
All of the breast milk the depot collects is thoroughly screened for safety.
The depot's grand opening is at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday.
The hospital has created a drop-off location for nursing moms who would like to donate. Women can go to Florida Hospital's lactation center on North Orange Avenue or call the milk depot at 407-303-2599.
