Officials look at ways to ease Sedona congestion

Updated:

SEDONA, Ariz. (AP) - When parking spaces at trailheads and recreation sites in and around Sedona fill up, cars start to line the streets.

Officials say that damages the landscape and creates safety issues for others flocking to the popular tourist spots.

They're looking at ways to reduce vehicle congestion through Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona. The Coconino National Forest, the city of Sedona and a regional transportation group have retained a firm to lead the project.

The first of 2 community meetings will be held Tuesday at the Sedona City Council chambers to talk about parking and take suggestions from the public. 1 of the ideas being tossed around is a shuttle service.

Some 3 million people visit the area each year, with traffic peaking during the spring and fall.
