David Does It: Artwork made from The Senator's remains

Posted: Updated:

A Central Florida artist is helping keep the spirit of The Senator alive by crafting artwork from the remains of the historic tree.

The Senator was a 3,500-year-old baldcypress tree in Longwood's Big Tree Park that burned down in January 2012. Law enforcement say that a woman trying to light drugs under the tree set it aflame.

Now, woodworker Jeff Matter has taken some of The Senator's remains and turning them into works of art. He creates bowls, vases, wine stoppers and other items from wood salvaged from the tree.

"I try to leave the burnt part on everything I do to at least commemorate the demise of the tree," Matter said.

On many items, he signs the back and engraves it with the words "Senator 1500 BC-2012."

None of the wood goes to waste -- he's even had inquiries from people interested in buying the sawdust in order to make paper and parchment.
