Coyote warnings posted in neighborhood where Chihuahua was snatched

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

Biologists have posted coyote warning signs around an Orlando neighborhood after one of the animals snatched a Chihuahua a couple of weeks ago.

The coyote signs are being posted around the Willow Wood subdivision in southwest Orlando.

The biologists say the signs are to alert residents that coyotes are frequenting the area and to keep pets close and dog food inside.

Just more than two weeks ago, a Chihuahua was snatched by a coyote early one morning as its owner helplessly watched. The coyote carried it off into the woods.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials say people with small domestic animals need to be careful, especially if their pet weighs less than 15 pounds.

Coyotes are typically more active from dusk until dawn, according to spokeswoman Joy Hill. Experts say that if you encounter a coyote, make loud noises, which typically will scare them off.
