Texas tornado outbreak kills 6

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The forecast this week around the Chicago area has been on cruise control. Not only did we see our first 90 degree day of the year, but three straight days of 80 degrees or higher. That hasn't happened since May 27th-29th of 2012.

Meanwhile in Texas, it was a completely different ball game as 12 tornadoes touched down Wednesday night (May 15th) killing 6 people and injuring more than two dozen. People who were missing in the wake of the destructive tornadoes in North Texas have been found safe.

The first tornado touched down in Montague County at 5:38pm and the last in Ennis at 12:10 a.m.

A slow moving area of low pressure was spinning over northern Texas drawing up huge amounts of gulf moisture with dew point temperatures reaching almost 70 degrees in some spots. Surface winds were coming from the south while winds at the mid-levels of the atmosphere were strong and coming out of the west/southwest. This is what we call vertical and directional wind shear or winds that are changing direction with height. This lead to rapid severe thunderstorm development, many of which were rotating, and eventually produced a large number of tornadoes.

One of the tornadoes that hit Hood County, was reported to be a 1 mile wide wedge tornado. . It was the first EF4 tornado to hit the Dallas area since 1994. Keep in mind these are still preliminary and could change over the course of a few days. So what is a "wedge" tornado? Click here to learn.

There was a slight risk for severe storms in that area, but the forecast for a significant tornado outbreak was not a major concern. That's just more proof of how unpredictable mother can be and another reminder that it's severe weather season.

Here's a breakdown of the 16 tornadoes in terms of rating, peak wind, path length & width, and the number of injured and killed.
