Disabled Teen Girl's Bite Marks Investigated

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A 16-year-old girl with cerebral palsy is on the mend after being savagely bitten on her back and shoulder. The questions: who did it, when and where?

Her parents blame a their daughter's classmate for a brutal attack. The school says no way. And child welfare officials are questioning the parents.

A wheelchair-bound teenager knows what happened but is unable to point the finger of blame.

Cerebral Palsy has confined 16-year-old Ariel Alexander to a wheelchair for most of her whole life. It has also robbed her of the ability to clearly communicate.

And so, she cannot tell us who did this: Human bite marks dot her left shoulder and upper back-- the individual teeth marks clear to see.

Randell Alexander, her father, said, "It's brutal! It is brutal. She has four human bites on her back along with nibbles up and down her arm. There's no way possible that no one's seen the incident occur."

Alexander and his wife believe the attack took place at MLK High School, where their daughter is a student, on Wednesday, May 1.

They say they noticed the marks two days later, and when they went to the school to report them, Alexander says a male teacher took them aside and told them a fellow student was responsible.

"The teacher told you there was a student doing what?" Gordon asked.

"Attacking, the individuals there. One of the special needs kids, I guess," the father said.
Ariel is part of a special needs classroom at MLK that includes six wheelchair-bound students and seven adult supervisors.

"It could not have happened at school, and if it could have -- if for some reason something happened-- someone would have seen it, out of seven," school district spokesman Fernando Gallard said.

"And all of those people have been interviewed and they say they saw nothing?" Gordon asked.

"That is correct," Gallard answered.

The school district reported Ariel's injuries to Philadelphia's Department of Human Services, which is investigating this as a possible case of child abuse.

Alexander says DHS seems to believe the marks may been made by Ariel's 17-year-old special-needs sister.

"They gonna try and pass the buck, say it happened here. No way, impossible," said the father.

Randell Alexander said DHS has already interviewed him and his wife and that investigators are due back next week to check on the welfare of his children.

Someone know who did this to Ariel.
