Surprise Police warn of scammers offering to do home, car repairs

Posted: Updated:

Police in Surprise are issuing a warning. They say senior citizens are being scammed out of money by people offering to do car and home repairs.

But they end up getting ripped off instead.

"These folks are just scammers if you want to put a label on it," says Officer Chris Tovar.

Officer Chris Tovar with the Surprise Police Department says these scammers are targeting folks across the valley in an unlikely place.

"Residents are being contacted in local parking lots and retail shopping plazas

In most cases -- they focus on a specific demographic.

"The senior citizen population is usually the target."

They offer amazing deals on a number of small jobs.

"Fixing a dent in a vehicle, sometimes it's landscaping, usually those are the two main points of focus," says Tovar.

But the job they do is usually done poorly. The scammers almost always request cash up front, and when you try to find them again, they disappear.

Cops say the best advice -- and it's something we've heard before – is "If it's too good to be true it is."
