DETROIT (WJBK) -

Anna Bailey was walking back from the gas station around 7:00 a.m. Thursday when she found 16-year-old Emonte Davis lying in the middle of the sidewalk on Sharon Street near West Vernor. He had been shot in the chest, and she tried to help.

"I just heard screaming, and then the kid was lying on the ground. I called 911," Bailey said. "I went and I checked his wrist for a pulse. A very faint pulse."

Emergency crews tried to revive Davis, but he died on the way to Henry Ford Hospital.

His father, brother and friends said Davis just celebrated his 16th birthday last week. He was an eighth grader at Spain Elementary, who dreamed of a career in basketball, a dream cut short by another senseless crime.

Police said the investigation has led to a known suspect, but there is no word yet on whether that person has been arrested.
