Welcome!  The "Throwback Thursday" blog is a place where I will share some of my favorite treasures that I dig out of the FOX 5 Sports archive.  As an Atlanta native, working in the WAGA-TV sports department is a dream come true.  This place has been home to an incredible list of talent and they have captured great moments in the history of Atlanta.

Every week, I will blow the dust off of our 3/4'' and Beta tapes to uncover video that hasn't seen the light of day in decades.  That process promises to re-introduce us to monumental and unusual moments in sports history.

For my first post, I decided to go back to May 1985.  Twenty-eight years ago, I was born in Decatur-- and I must admit that I don't remember much from that month, so going through our archive quickly got me up to speed.

We've got video of Herschel Walker catching a touchdown from Doug Flutie in the USFL, Gerald Perry hitting homers for the Braves, and Bill Elliott getting the win at Talladega.  There were also a couple of stories that caught my eye and featured a pair of athletes faced with the decision of staying in school or going pro.

TAPE: SP-433  DATE: 5-10-85 SLUG: LANIER SKIING/LEACHMAN TIMECODE: 21:00

The first story is a VO/SOT (industry jargon for video and a sound bite) about a water skier named Jennifer Leachman.  She is skiing at an event at Lake Lanier.  In her sound bite, she talks about why she decided to drop out of school and pursue professional water skiing.

After a quick Google search, I learned that Leachman had just walked away from a basketball scholarship at Georgia Tech to become a pro skier.  Apparently it worked out: http://articles.latimes.com/1991-05-16/sports/sp-2397_1_water-skiing

SP-433  DATE: 5-14-85 SLUG: NCAA TENNIS TIMECODE: 25:00

The other story you'll see above features UGA tennis star Mikael Pernfors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikael_Pernfors).  Bill Hartman's piece explains that instead of going pro following a national championship his junior year, the Swede decided to come back to Georgia.

The story previews his run at a second straight NCAA championship (Spoiler: he wins and they end up naming UGA's center court after him).  It also features Bill Hartman sporting a shaggy haircut, Bulldog legend Dan Magill, a great headband and some incredible 80's tennis shorts.

Our weekly Team of the Week pep rallies are now a staple of High 5 Sports, but they certainly are nothing new to WAGA.  This week's video is a Channel 5 pep rally from December 1982.
