Bulger defense requests discovery related to government witnesses

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- James "Whitey" Bulger's defense team has requested more information about sources that reportedly shared information with the FBI about government witness and former Bulger associated Kevin Weeks.

In a discovery request released Friday, Bulger's attorneys request the identity of a confidential source that told the FBI Kevin Weeks and his associates threatened them from testifying before a grand jury or cooperating with law enforcement. They also request the identity of a source named in a 2006 FBI report that claims Weeks and another associate, Patrick Nee, were involved in the sale of illegal narcotics. The defense requested documents from any investigation into the tip, if an investigation was conducted.

Weeks led Bulger's organization, reportedly with instructions from Bulger communicated to him via telephone, after the reputed mob boss went on the lam. Weeks became a witness when faced with a racketeering charge after Bulger and Steve "The Rifleman Flemmi" were outed as informants. The former member of the mob underworld led investigators to the burial sites of several of Bulger's alleged victims. He has been announced as a government witness in the 83-year-old's upcoming trial.

In addition to information related to Weeks, the defense requested an unredacted report about allegations of an FBI agent's contact with Bulger and his associates.

The defense also requested two testimonies from a woman named Julie Rakes. Rakes and her husband claimed they were threatened by Bulger and Flemmi into selling their South Boston liquor store in the 1980s. Her husband, Steven, is listed as a government witness in Bulger's June 6 trial.
