K-Rod reflects on Memorial Day: Are you worthy?

This past Saturday, I attended a book signing at the Acworth Bookstore which featured 92-year-old Theodore "Dutch" Van Kirk, who is the last surviving crewman of the Enola Gay-- the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima in World War II.    Dutch was the navigator on that historic mission of August 6, 1965, and he was signing his book, My True Course.

It was an honor just being in the same room with him.  For slowly and surely, these great heroes are passing.   And soon there will be none left to remind us of the sacrifices that made our great nation great.

So, in that spirit, I spent part of this Memorial Day walking around Marietta National Cemetery, taking in this day which is set aside to remember those who gave and paid the ultimate price-- gave everything for our country-- FOR US!   We are and will forever be indebted to those who have given their lives that we might be free.

From a Memorial Day speech delivered by Ronald Reagan (Arlington National Cemetery, May 31, 1982):

"The United States and the freedom for which it stands, the freedom for which they died, must endure and prosper. Their lives remind us that freedom is not bought cheaply. It has a cost; it imposes a burden. And just as they whom we commemorate were willing to sacrifice, so too must we-- in a less final, less heroic way-- be willing to give of ourselves."

As another Memorial Day comes and goes, ask yourself: Is this still the country-- and are you the kind of citizen worthy of that sacrifice?

It matters not to me whether you take up arms.  You can support our servicemen past, current and future by simply being as honorable and courageous as they were-- and continue to be.

As we remember our fallen heroes, we pray that our heroes will never have to die for us again.   But if they must...  I pray that we will honor them with our lives and how we nurture this fragile freedom that they've helped protect.

"Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We did not pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free."

    The Indiana Pacers got the better of the Atlanta Hawks Tuesday night in game two of the first round of the NBA playoffs. The Pacers defeated the Hawks 101-85 and have now tied the series at one win apiece. The Pacers won on a strong performance out of their star forward Paul George.
