Wednesday will mark one week since four fourth-grade boys were struck by a landslide in St. Paul's Lilydale Regional Park, and a big fundraiser is getting underway to benefit the victims' families.
Two of the Peter Hobart Elementary School students were killed, and two others were injured during their field trip to the fossil yard last week. Since then, the community has come together for support ever since.
At Muddy Paws Cheesecake, Tami Cabrera's office space has transformed into warehouse space containing items to be sold at a silent auction that will benefit the victims' families.
"Really expensive oils from Italy and pasta and sauces," Cabrera said of the items. "People really went out of their way."
A memorial dedicated to Mohamed Fofana and Haysem Sani, the two boys who died in the landslide, continues to grow on the sidewalk outside the school -- and that's where the gift baskets come in.
The Peter Hobart Elementary PTAO organized an online auction at 32auctions.com, which will benefit the families and children who are struggling to cope with what transpired.
All of the items are expected to be ready for sale as soon as Saturday.
