Gmail's New Inbox Clutterbuster Looks Awesome

Posted: Updated:

Great news Gmail users! The folks in Mountain View, CA are rolling out a new update that appears to be just what you need to make your data-centric lives easier. The biggest update to Gmail in quite some time will present you with a new inbox focused on helping you smash clutter and leave you with what really matters, when it matters.

The new inbox will roll out to users in the coming weeks and will help you focus on whatever you need to get done by grouping your mail into categories which will appear as tabs at the top of your inbox on the desktop and as what appears to be sliding panes, accessible from the omnibox-like button in the upper left-hand corner of your Gmail inbox on mobile. According to the Official Gmail Blog, when you first open your Gmail app for Android 4.0+ or iOS, you'll see your Primary mail but you'll be able to navigate easily to other tabs which will aggregate all of your social media related email notifications, promotional emails like deals and offers, receipts and confirmations and more.

The purpose of this is to give you better control over the flood of information blasting its way into your life through your inbox so you'll have the ability to select which tabs you see, apparently up to five of them. Further details on the official blog post state that you'll also be able to "drag-and-drop to move messages between tabs, set certain senders to always appear in a particular tab and star messages so that they also appear in the Primary tab."

Every large company knows, or should know, that many users get just a little testy when you start making changes to products or services they're familiar with so Google will enable you to turn off all the optional tabs and go back to classic view or switch to any of their other inbox options, like Priority (which I'm not a huge fan of). If you're antsy to get the inbox prior to it magically appearing for you one day, the gmail teams says you can just "keep an eye on the gear menu and select Configure inbox when it appears in the Settings options."

It's no secret that Microsoft has struggled in the hardware department so I can't say whether the Surface Pro 3 will be the hero Microsoft needs but I can say it is the modern computing experience users deserve. I love it and think you should too! Read on to find out why.
