Goodrich family huddled in basement as F2 tornado destroyed home

GOODRICH, Mich. (WJBK) -

A broken plate says "blessings," and that is exactly how a family feels even though a storm destroyed their home.

A tornado touched down in Shiawassee County, another near Flint, a total of six Tuesday night according to the National Weather Service, plowing a path of destruction through several communities.

An F2 tornado with 130 mile per hour winds destroyed the Mahaffy home in Goodrich. They had just moved in a month ago.

"It wasn't so much that I saw the house was gone, it's that I saw there was no house there," says neighbor Jim Seeling.

He looked outside and grabbed a flashlight in the pitch black worried about his neighbors. Tom, the dad, was at work, but mom, Ashley, and their three small children were in that house next door.

"She was a hero. She covered her children up," says Bob Bush, Ashley's father.

Bush had been on the phone with his daughter texting and telling her to take cover.

"He's the reason I went down. He called me. 'I'm not joking. You take those babies down there,'" says Ashley Mahaffy.

"She asked if I was still in the basement, and I said, 'We're okay now, but you stay in the basement. It's coming your way,'" Bush says. "Two minutes later she said, 'We're hit.' It's a text you never want to get."

Inside in the basement, Mahaffy huddled with her babies. They were scared.

"I just said let's pray and everything will be okay," Mahaffy says. "I just covered them up with pillows and just held them, and it was over pretty fast."

Mahaffy heard the damage being done overhead, but had no idea the extent of the destruction.

"I ran an opened the door down here, and I yelled that I have kids inside," Mahaffy says.

A first responder came to check on her and pulled her children from the debris. She asked if she could run upstairs and get their shoes. She says the response was "you have no upstairs."

The home may be gone, but they feel so blessed to still have the family.

"This can all be replaced. I don't even care. My kids are safe and healthy, and I'm lucky. I'm really lucky," says Mahaffy.
