Detroit Grand Prix fun kicks off with street festival

We are just days away from the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, but the fun started on Wednesday with a free festival at Campus Martius Park.

The Grand Prix is hosting five races this weekend. Friday is Free Prix Day where you and the kids to watch practice and qualifying.

"We have Dwele in concert on Friday night. We have concerts on Saturday with Bret Michaels and Plain White T's on Sunday," said Grand Prix Race Chairman Bud Denker.

Wednesday, sponsors of the Grand Prix put on a street festival for fans. There was food, driver meet and greets, lots of good music and more, including a pit crew demonstration and a parade of big rigs.

"City Council, the mayor's office and all the corporate community have really pulled together with us, and I think that's made a big difference," said Roger Penske.

He promised a cheering crowd the Grand Prix is committed to Detroit. Meanwhile, this year's track is bigger and better than ever.

"Last year, of course, we had a couple potholes that stopped the race. So since then, we've put over 100,000 feet of new concrete, $2 million we spent on the race track, over $500,000 have been put on Belle Isle," Denker said.

And that is just the beginning.

"New turns, new action, more passing than ever before on Belle Isle," Denker added.

1,200 volunteers worked for twelve weeks to get the track right.
