MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (WJBK) -

Mark Schauer, the newly anointed Democratic candidate for governor, brought his campaign to Mackinac Island where his likely opponent, Republican Governor Rick Snyder, got center stage attention from the audience of business movers and shakers.

Meanwhile, Schauer was relegated to basically doing interviews on the Grand Hotel porch.

One of his first assignments, however, will be to convince Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel, who revealed for the first time that he will remain neutral in the race for governor, even though the Democrat expects some push back from his own party.

"Will I get push back from that? Absolutely," Hackel says. "I'm not a person that is just going to go out there with a special interest and say I'm going to support people blindly just because everybody else is telling me to do that."

Schauer says he doesn't know Hackel and wants a chance to change his mind about that neutrality.

Having Hackel on the sidelines is a political plus for Snyder, who has worked with the Macomb County leader on economic development items.

So what does the governor know about Schauer?

"I understand he's a Democratic candidate for governor. That's about it," Snyder says.
