ATLANTA -

An Atlanta mom jumped into action when a thief stole her SUV with her 4-year-old son in the back seat on Thursday morning, and it paid off.  Hilary Grotewold tells FOX 5 she jumped on the hood of the vehicle as the suspect sped away, trying to get him to stop.

According to police, witnesses flagged down an APD officer at a Race Trac gas station on Marietta Boulevard just before 8 a.m.  They said they had seen a woman chasing a gray GMC Terrain down the road and screaming that her baby was in the car.

Investigators say Grotewold flagged down the same officer on Bolton Road and told him that she pulled up to the air pump to fill her tire with her 4-year-old boy inside her SUV.  She says when she bent down to put air in her tire, someone drove off in her SUV.

Grotewold says she first jumped on the hood, and then tried to grab onto a mirror, but she fell off as the suspect sped away.  She said she chased the SUV to a nearby CVS pharmacy.  That's where the suspect abandoned the SUV after realizing there was a child in the back.

Grotewold's son was not hurt.

The suspect did get away with Grotewold's purse and iPhone.  Police are working to track the phone's location.  They say a couple of her credit cards have also been used, so they're tracking that activity, too.

Police say the suspect was a black man who was wearing a gray hat and a gray back pack.  Construction workers tell police they saw the suspect running east on Marietta Boulevard toward La Dawn Lane.

Police are checking to see whether the incident was captured on surveillance video.

Prosecutors considered him their key witness, a longtime Gwinnett developer given immunity to spill what he knew about corruption inside county government. David Jenkins testified before a Gwinnett grand jury in 2010. He also met multiple times with prosecutors. Those interviews were videotaped. Four years later, prosecutors agreed to a no contest plea bargain with former commissioner Kevin Kenerly on one count of bribery. He will serve 10 years on probation and pay a $10,000 fine.
