MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

A Hennepin County jury on Friday convicted a Minneapolis father of manslaughter and child endangerment in the accidental shooting of his two-year-old son last December at the hands of the toddler's four-year-old brother.

Kao Xiong, 31, was found guilty of two counts of second-degree manslaughter and two counts of child endangerment. He was acquitted of a third child endangerment charge.

Xiong said each day he came home to spend lunch with his wife and three young sons. When he returned home around noon that day, two-year-old Neegnco and his four-year-old brother went into an upstairs bedroom to play. Minutes later, he heard a gunshot and knew it came from the pistol he kept in a holster under his pillow.

Xiong rushed upstairs to find Neegnco bleeding from his stomach while his brother tried to hide under the bed. Despite calling 911 and trying to perform CPR on his young son, the boy died in the ambulance on the scene.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said he takes no satisfaction in the verdict but that it sends a message to gun owners that they can't leave unlocked weapons around children.

Sentencing is set for June 27. The sentencing guidelines call for four years in prison.
