Construction, events clog Atlanta's roadways

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Anyone trying to get into the city on Saturday would know that traffic was bumper to bumper on almost every roadway.

One of the big reasons for the delays is construction. Due to the Memorial Day holiday and the moratorium on construction, construction crews were trying to get as much done this weekend.

Interstate 285 along the top end was in the red in both directions for most of the day between Interstate 75 and Interstate 85 due to on-going repaving effort there.

The Downtown Connector was also jammed as three lanes of traffic in the southbound lanes were closed. This caused delays on Interstate 75 up to Moores Mill Road, Interstate 85 near Clairmont and Georgia Highway 400 up to the toll. Northbound traffic was also slow moving due to on-looker delays.

Construction in DeKalb County near the Interstate 28 and Interstate 285 exchanges caused delays along the west side perimeter as well as along Interstate 20.

U.S. Highway 78 was also packed near Stone Mountain Park due to people trying to enjoy the nice day on Saturday.

General traffic delays were also logged on Interstate 75 south of the Interstate 675 split.

Surface streets were also clogged as drivers tried to find alternatives.

Officials say that in addition to the construction, events like Virginia Highlands' SummerFest and the Braves game added to the congestion.

Construction should continue Sunday as long as the weather doesn't interfere with plans. Drivers are advised to add extra time to their commute.
