SOUTH DAYTONA, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) -
The laundry room at the Golf View Apartments in South Daytona is out of service, one day after 67-year-old Donald Clark was murdered here. Neighbor Jim Benge went to do laundry Sunday morning and found Clark face down on the floor. Benge is still stunned.
"A little unsettled, a little scared about somebody out there who could bring harm to somebody else if they don't get caught soon," he said.
Acting Police Chief Ron Wright said Clark's keys, wallet, cell phone and car are all missing, signs of a likely robbery.
"The man gets shot in the back of the head execution style," said Capt. Wright. "Totally unacceptable!"
The car is a 2011 white Mitsubishi Gallant with Florida tag 209NHS.
"The car is everything to us. It holds extreme evidentiary value," said Capt. Wright. "Somebody's going to see where that car is at. Somebody knows where that car is. Somebody knows who did this."
Investigators believe a bicycle could be an important clue in the case. They found it about 30 feet from the laundry room. If they can determine who was riding it Sunday morning, it could generate a strong lead, they said.
Clark lived in the same apartment for 15 years without problems and was popular with neighbors. Investigators believe he was not targeted but was just in the wrong place when a thug was looking for someone to rob.
"For a car? For a roll of quarters that he was doing laundry with?" asked Benge. "It's terrible. I sure hope they find the guy soon."
