DETROIT (WJBK) -

Michael Grundy was once a Wayne County hot shot juggling politics and running a program to provide healthcare to poor folks, but Tuesday in federal court, he admitted to cheating those poor folks by taking kickbacks.

I exposed this dirty deal more than a year ago for The Detroit Free Press. Grundy was an assistant Wayne County executive helping run the county's healthcare program for needy families.

My report showed that he steered $400,000 to a bogus company run by Keith Griffin, a childhood pal.

Grundy ultimately faced 32 charges, but ended up pleading guilty to just one count of public corruption.

As part of his deal, Grundy agreed to give up more than $7,000 and in his interest in a beautiful home in Detroit's Sherwood Forest neighborhood.

Former Detroit FBI boss Andy Arena said Grundy betrayed taxpayers.

"We should expect honest services out of him, and we didn't get it," he said. "People should be outraged by this."

Wayne County Executive Bob Ficano said Grundy abused his position and got what he deserved.

Arena said other pleas may follow, even if it takes some time.

"The U.S. attorney and the FBI, they're going to move at the right speed. They're going to do it at their own speed. They're not going to be dictated how they do this thing. Sometimes they say move with a glacier, but a glacier crushes," he said.

Grundy's fight is far from over. He will be back in federal court in September to argue about how much time he should do in prison. Ultimately that call will be made by the judge.
