Fiery crash in Ham Lake kills 2, 1 in critical condition

HAM LAKE, Minn. (KMSP) -

A two-vehicle crash killed two and left one in critical condition in Ham Lake, Minn., on Wednesday morning.

The Anoka County Sheriff's Office, Blaine police and the Ham Lake Fire Department responded to the head-on crash after 8 a.m. near the intersection of Lexington Avenue and Lever Street, just north of Crosstown Boulevard.

A couple in their 70s, Richard and Deanna McGill of Stacy, Minn., were traveling in a Ford Fusion and were pronounced dead at the scene. The other vehicle, a Toyota Highlander, was ablaze with 33-year-old Maplewood, Minn., man Jay Mottley trapped inside.

The fire was put out before it reached the cab, and Anoka County Sheriff's Office Cmdr. Paul Sommer said Mottley did not sustain any burns; however, he was seriously injured in the crash and it took 20 minutes to pry him from the wreck.

Mottley is now in critical condition at Hennepin County Medical Center in an induced coma.

The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating the crash scene as there are no known witnesses at this time. Crash investigators say the damage suggests the cars collided head-on, but it is unknown which car may have crossed the center line or why.

In the past five years, there have been 47 crashes on Lexington Avenue. It's estimated that a third of them occur on the S-curve where Wednesday's crash occurred.

Neighbor Frank Ferraro captured video footage of the crash because he says something needs to be done.

"I mean, my life is in danger every day," he said. "It's very dangerous -- especially when they're coming around that at 70 mph."

Residents say it's not uncommon to risk a rear-end crash simply by coming out of the driveway because the 45 mph speed limit is often ignored. Many say the signs need to be a lot bigger.
