Harper High School students meet with First Lady, President Obama

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Twenty-two students from Chicago's Harper High School visited the White House Wednesday and met with First Lady Michelle Obama.

"In their conversation, the First Lady and the students caught up and discussed their graduation, prom, and post high school plans," Chief of Staff to the First Lady Tina Tchen said.

They were also surprised by a visit from President Obama. He showed them the original Emancipation Proclamation that hangs in the Oval Office.

Back in April, Mrs. Obama visited Harper to talk about youth empowerment amid the violence that plagues their neighborhood. 

The school has been hit especially hard recently. This year alone, 29 students from harper have been shot. Eight of those students did not survive their injuries.

The students will visit Howard University on Thursday.
