CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

On Wednesday, 566 people donned red and blue to break the Guinness World Record for the most people dressed in one place as Superman at Sears Holdings' headquarters in Hoffman Estates.

Part of Christopher Nolan's new Superman movie "Man of Steel," starring Henry Cavill and Amy Adams, was filmed in Chicago and features several marketing plugs for Sears. The film opens Friday.

Organizers of a yearly festival honoring Superman in the southern Illinois city that claims the Man of Steel as its favorite son are hoping to smash a world record.

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reports planners of the Superman Celebration in the 6,500-resident Ohio River community of Metropolis have their eyes set on entering the record books for the most people dressed as the superhero at one time.

The mark now stands at 437. The Metropolis festival gets underway Thursday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
