NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A 600 lb. dolphin that was struggling on a sandbar just south of Jones Beach was rescued and taken to the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead, NY.

The nine foot adult female Risso's dolphin was spotted on Thursday. Rescuers used a stretcher to move it to a nearby residential beach.

"We are extremely grateful for the support shown and share the success of this rescue with the USCG Fire Island personnel as well as the community members of Oak Beach which assisted our efforts to render aid to this stricken animal", stated Kimberly Durham, Rescue Program Director.

A Risso dolphin has a large dorsal fin, narrow tail and bulbous head.

It is the second dolphin rescued by the Riverhead Foundation in the last two weeks.

Another female dolphin was found dead approximately 26 miles north of Manhattan.

It had ingested four plastic bags which caused the dolphin to starve, said Durham.
