Tim Skubick: Romney must be thinking, 'I missed it by 6 months'

LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

Mitt Romney must be thinking these days, "I missed it by six months."

Missed what?

The Obama administration's spying on Americans.

One can only wonder what might have happened had all this stuff unfolded as the two candidates dashed for the finish line last November.

Mr. Romney would have had a wealth of material to exploit: The IRS mess, the AP and FOX News data harvesting and now all the other stuff from listening in on the Internet to mining the phone records of Verizon customers.

The White House has the wagons in a circle as this story refuses to go away. No one is predicting where it will end as both Republicans and Democrats want some answers to some tricky questions.

What did you know, when did you know it and why did you need to know it? And those are just for openers. And yes that does bring back memories of Watergate and the Nixon White House spying efforts, too.

The president forcefully the other day tried to lower the temperature by saying nobody listened in on phone conversations and by revealing that "everyone" in Congress knew this was going on.

And said nothing about it?

Saying something about it and coming to President Obama's side the other day was none other than Michigan's own conservative GOP Congressman Mike Rogers (R-Brighton.) He announced that all this hush-hush behind-the-scenes intel work saved the country from a terrorist attack.

Wonder if the prez sent Mr. R. a thank you note?

It looks like the country is headed for another emotional debate that President Bush started over how far government can or should venture into our private lives to protect us from some terrorist group.

In the post 9-11 era there was little debate as Mr.Bush had little trouble getting an eager Congress to adopt the Patriot Act. Protecting civil liberties never made it into the dialogue then.

There was a tad more debate when the Congress had to renew the act, but now with so much out in the open regarding how far the snooping has gone, a full-fledge, knock-down give-and-take appears to be in the offing. The President says bring it on, noting it is "healthy" for the country.

Meanwhile the President continues to take his lumps.

How did ya like that headline on the Huffington Post: "George W. Obama" with a picture of Mr. Obama and Mr. Bush morphed into each other?

They most likely won't be framing that for display in the West Wing anytime soon.

Oh boy, the anti-Granholm mob will have fun with this.  They are talking in California about running the former Michigan governor for something as part of the “new generation” of D’s on the west bank.
