Santa Monica Shootings: A Mother's Heartbreak

Posted: Updated:
Santa Monica, CA -

I could hear the heartbreak in her voice. I could see it in her eyes.

She is a mother and her son has just been shot. While we spoke, he was dying but she didn't know it. Or maybe she did and was hoping against hope for yet another miracle.

I'm talking about the mother of the former gang member who was shot and killed in Santa Monica this morning.

I spent some time with her, speaking in her native Spanish, as she waited for someone to take her and her husband to the hospital.

I admired her honesty when she told me that yes, her son had been in gangs all his life and no, this wasn't the first time he had been shot.

"He was trying to get out", she said.

He had a fulltime job; didn't own a weapon; was the proud father of a small child and was trying to get out, she repeated over and over. Like any mother, she worried. She had just told him to be careful and he said he would be, asked her not to worry because he wouldn't get in trouble.

"But trouble can find you", she told him.

"Cuando me toca, me toca", she said he replied. "When it's my turn, it my turn."

Today it was Gil's turn.

Trouble found him, as his mother feared, at 8 am today right outside their apartment in Santa Monica. It came in the form of a guy with a gun, who unloaded a lot of it right into Gil and a friend.

Gil may have been trying to get out but it's not that easy. Enemy's have a long memory; old scores are settled whether you're in or out and the street life has a way of catching up to you. Karma does too.

I wish Gil could have seen his mother's face; her pain etched in every wrinkle; her eyes dull from crying; heard her request to a stranger, me, that I say a prayer for her son.

Today it was Gil's turn and a part of his mother died with him.
