Feds: Leaving appliances plugged in overnight may be dangerous - FOX 35 News Orlando

Leaving appliances plugged in overnight may be dangerous, federal agency says

Posted: Updated:

Leaving your appliances and cell phones plugged in while you sleep could be dangerous -- and in one case, deadly -- federal agency says.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends using appliances only during the day, when someone in the home is awake.

The recommendation comes after the agency says it's seen cases of cell phone chargers sparking when left plugged in overnight.

In one reported case, a person died after a dishwasher left running overnight overheated or malfunctioned and caused a fatal fire.

Many appliances have fail-safe technology built-in to power them down when they overheat, but that doesn't always happen.
