One Dead, One Injured In Bus Collision, Truck Into Store

(FOX 11 / CNS) A Metro bus driver was killed today when the bus and a flatbed tow truck collided in downtown Los Angeles, sending the truck careening into a mini-market, authorities said.

The tow truck driver was badly injured in the crash, which occurred about 5:10 a.m. at 457 S. Broadway, near Fifth Street, said Katherine Main of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The 35-year-old bus driver was freed from the wreckage by firefighters and taken to a hospital in critical condition, Main said. She later died, said Dave Sotero of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Her name was withheld, pending notification of her relatives.

Sotero said the bus driver -- who was just starting her route -- was the only occupant on the bus at the time of the crash. The 30-year-old man driving the truck was taken to a hospital.

"It appears, based on witness testimony and (security) video footage, the tow truck driver was at fault,'' Los Angeles police Sgt. Rudy Lopez told the news media. The trucker, hospitalized in critical condition, may have been going about twice the posted 30-mph speed limit in the area, Channel 2 reported.

As a result of the collision, a fire hydrant was sheared, and the tow truck crashed into a 7-Eleven store, Main said. A store employee was evaluated at the scene, but was not injured. A building inspector was summoned to determine the building's structural integrity, Main said.
