Vandals break water line causing mess at Detroit rec center

DETROIT (WJBK) -

The parking lot of the Balduck Recreation Center on Canyon looked like a pond. Workers were wringing out mops and trying to clean up the building and replace the locks after vandals made a huge mess there overnight.

"Someone had to have popped the locks off of three or four doors and for whatever reason snapped a main water line in the building," said Terry Brennan with the Eagle Sports Club, which uses the facility to store equipment and nearby fields for leagues.

Volunteers, in turn, help the city maintain Balduck Park, and as you know, there are not enough of these facilities in such good condition.

"The city's working real hard to rebound, and it's nonsense. It's just silly," Brennan said.

The timing of this is adding to the stress for the organization. This weekend 500 children ages four to 14 and their families will be at the park playing baseball from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Due to the huge flood, the water at the recreation center is temporarily shut off, and that means no bathrooms for now.

"It sounds like a small thing, but when you have four- and five-year-olds playing tee ball and they can't go to the bathroom, that's a big panic on the field," Brennan explained.

He said as far as they can tell there was only damage. Nothing was stolen.

The sports club also uses the facility for soccer and flag football. It is a positive place in the city where good things are happening.

Anyone with information on who may be responsible should call police.
