Black leaders demand conversation with Flake over son's comments

PHOENIX -

There's more backlash from the racist and homophobic comments made online by the teenage son of Arizona Senator Jeff Flake.

A well-known civil rights group is now demanding a meeting with the senator.

Members of Arizona's NAACP are outraged over the comments and over how the senator responded to the comments. They say this issue demands more than a simple apology from the senator and his son.

The n-word. Gay Slurs. Over and over again. And a post reading "Mexicans are the scum of the earth." These are some of the writings on the web from senator flake's teenage son, dating back months.

"I thought the comments were some of the ugliest things that a person can say and for it to come from Senator Flake's family it was very disturbing," says Rev. Jarrett Maupin.

In a statement, Senator Flake apologized for his son Tanner's behavior, saying, "I'm very disappointed in my son's words and this language is unacceptable anywhere..."

But for many people, including members of Arizona's NAACP, the senator's statement doesn't go far enough.

"I don't think an apology is ever to be accepted by one individual, and I can tell you by talking to hundreds of Phoenicians no. His two sentences he sent out over email, no that's not enough."

Several black leaders in Arizona sent a letter to Senator Flake. They are asking for a face to face meeting and they want it now.

"This is an absolutely a teachable moment, but it does reflect on the senator. The saying we have in our community is the apple doesn't fall far from the tree."

Still, many say the senator isn't to blame for his son's actions.

We asked the senator's office if he would consider meeting with the group. No word yet if the senator plans on doing that.
