WASHINGTON, DC -

Metro officials say a red line train has been disabled near the Rhode Island Avenue station after it hit metal service stairs at the end of the platform.  The stairs became dislodged and caused damage to a signal box and metal railing along the side of the track.

Officials say no injuries were reported after the outbound train with 63 passengers aboard was disabled just after noon on Friday.

Passengers were transferred to another train through doors at the front of the train.

Metro warns that there will be delays along the red line until the disruption is resolved since rains are using just one track between the Takoma and NoMa-Gallaudet stations.

FROM METRO

As of 2:30 p.m., Red Line trains are single tracking between NoMa-Gallaudet and Brookland stations due to a disabled train near Rhode Island Avenue.

The incident began shortly after 12 p.m. as an outbound train was departing Rhode Island Avenue Station.  Preliminarily, the train is believed to have made contact with metal service stairs at the end of the platform.  The stairs became dislodged and caused damage to a signal box and metal railing along the side of the track.

Crews are on the scene making repairs to the damaged signal box and railing at this time.  The repair work may affect rush hour service.

Red Line customers are advised of the possibility of delays during rush hour due to single tracking around this incident.  Delays are currently approximately 10 minutes in each direction.  During rush hour, delays could be 10 to 20 minutes for some customers.
