Back to driving school for parents, too!

Posted: Updated:

While high-schoolers are out of school, many of them are spending their summer behind the wheel learning how to drive. Defensive driving schools are busy and they're even the parents involved, too.

The number one teacher for new teen drivers are the parents, but who's teaching the parents to drive when basic laws and techniques have changed over the years?

Robert Moore, 18, is spending his summer vacation in a different kind of classroom.

"I'm actually here to complete my 30 hours of in-class and six hours of in-car instruction for my license," he said.

On top of his bookwork, Robert is also getting some hands on attention.

Moore said, "Being on the road is probably the best instruction and maybe for a lot of people because it's real world and it gives you first-hand experience of how to manage your car and how to drive better on the road."

But, the majority of teens are still learning most of the driving skills in the car with mom or dad. What parents may not know is that even some basic techniques have changed since they first got behind the wheel.

"So many things are different from when their parents took Driver's Ed. A lot of them didn't have cell phones driving. We have an entire section on texting and driving. Unfortunately, drinking and driving is now an issue," said Ashley Nally, from Taggart's Driving School.

And these aren't your parent's classes, so to speak. Remember the 10-and-2 position taught for years? Now instructors are teaching a 9-and-3 position instead.
