Copper stolen from Detroit church's air conditioning unit

When the doors of the church opened for this past Sunday's service, something was wrong at the house of worship, and it was right outside.

"Air conditioner unit was desecrated," said Pastor James Jackson.

A $30,000 heating and cooling unit was picked and pried apart, blow torched and torn up. What happened at Fellowship of Love on Lahser on Detroit's west side was fueled by hate and greed. How dare you take what God built and tear it down?

"Shame on you," Jackson said. "Black on black crime perpetrated against one another. We hurt ourselves more so than we hurt anybody else."

"It's all about green. They do it for the money."

The creeps crept up like thieves in the night and had their devilish sights set on copper, and when they got their hands on it, you know where they were headed, to the scrap yard.

"The guys that are causing this to happen are the guys that are receiving this copper," Jackson said.

The ones doing the robbing are not the only crooks here. Receiving stolen property is a crime, too.

"They're just as guilty, and the ones that sit up there and we vote them in office, they need to do something about this," Jackson said.

The pastor is just not calling out the thugs that came to his church and ripped off his congregation. He is calling out everybody, anybody who is not doing anything to solve this problem.

"A law needs to be instituted that when you go and sell copper, that you need to have some kind of proof of identification, and that will stop it," he said. "Instead of having all our police down at the casino, they should have in the community."

Pastor Jackson is disappointed, but not discouraged. The police know what happened. He has insurance, so they will replace what was destroyed, and he will continue to pray for the people responsible.
