Death row inmate Dale Hausner found dead in cell

Posted: Updated:

Death row inmate Dale Hausner, dubbed the "Serial Shooter," was found unresponsive in his cell Wednesday and pronounced dead.

He was housed in a cell by himself at ASPC-Eyman in Florence, as is the custom with death row inmates. Guards check on inmates once an hour.

Hausner was found about 12 p.m. Prison staff and medical responders administered CPR, and he was transported to Florence Hospital in Anthem where he was pronounced deceased at 1:15 p.m.

The Arizona Department of Corrections says 40-year-old Hausner died of "unknown causes." A medical examiner will now determine his cause of death. It's unclear if there were any signs of trauma to his body.

Hausner was in the process of fast-tracking his execution. He has asked the judge to waive his right to appeals and be executed as soon as possible.

ADC hasn't said whether or not Hausner was on suicide watch.

It can take as long as 20 years for death sentences to make their way through all the appeals processes. The average amount of time is 18 years.

Hausner was convicted in 2009 of murdering six people and wounding 18 others in random nighttime shootings in 2006. Pedestrians, bicyclists and animals were targeted.

Hausner came to ADC custody on March 30, 2009.

On Facebook, Hausner's brother wrote: "Today's lesson -- when you do harm to innocent people, it will come back to you. Death brings death, life brings life. Help as many people as you can and good will come back to you. Harm the innocent and it will eventually destroy you."

He later wrote: "Thank you for all the well wishes. But let's please send our love and prayers to those who need it and deserve it the most -- the Innocent victims of senseless crimes."

It could be weeks or months before a cause of death is released.
