Officer, 2 off-duty first-responders help save man

Posted: Updated:
COVINGTON, Ga. -

A police officer, a deputy and a nurse are being called heroes for saving an elderly man's life.

Ernest Smith, 72, crashed his truck after going into cardiac arrest at a busy intersection in Covington. Police say Smith was at a red light when he lost consciousness and his foot hit the accelerator, lurching the truck forward. A passenger tried to grab the wheel but the truck hit a sign, light post and tree.

Fortunately, Covington Police Officer Brian Capps was in parking lot just seconds away. Together with an off-duty deputy and an off-duty nurse, they performed CPR and then used a defibrillator on Smith.

Capps says he's had plenty of training, but has never had to shock someone.

"Just hit the button and hope for the best," Capps said.

The nurse was checking Smith's pulse.

"She said, ‘I'm getting a weak pulse,' and it got stronger and stronger," Capps said.

Chandra Mitchell says it's a miracle they were all at the right place at the right time to help her uncle.

"My twin sister called me and said my uncle was in a wreck and I just freaked out," Mitchell said. "We thank God for them because they came to my uncle's rescue."

The Covington Police Department is one of the few police agencies that have a defibrillator in ever patrol car. It's an added cost, but they say saving one life makes it worth it.

Capps said it was a huge relief when the paramedics arrived to take over.

Smith's family said that he is scheduled to have quadruple bypass surgery on Thursday morning.
