East Rockaway students enjoy free prom

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

During Hurricane Sandy, East Rockaway High School in Long Island was devastated and students were forced to relocate for 6 months. Now after tragedy the students are back in their school and are being treated to a special prom.

The Midsummer Night's Dream-themed prom in Sands Point was was all made possible by ladies from Rent The Runway: Jennifer Hyman and Jenny Fleiss.

You can rent designer fashions from their website so they treated these juniors and seniors to dresses and shoes. Even the young men wore suits thanks to Men's Wearhouse.

Thanks to senior Molly Bastow, who submitted an essay to Rent the Runway, her high school won this free prom.

The kids got to see special guests: Glee's Darren Criss and American Idol's Jordin Sparks. Both Darren and Jordin performed a few songs for the students.

    Police say they arrested and charged a suspect in connection with the murder of a Brooklyn woman whose body parts were discovered in Bay Shore. Suffolk County homicide squad and the US Marshals NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Leah Cuevas, 42, on Wednesday night. Cuevas lived on 346 Sumpter Ave. in Brooklyn, the same address as the victim, Chinelle Latoya Thompson Browne, 27. Cuevas was charged with second-degree murder and held overnight at Suffolk's Fourth Precinct.

    A fire started in a shoe repair store on Long Island and destroyed neighboring stores on Thursday morning. Firefighters were called to Willis Avenue and Goodrich Street in Williston Park around 2:30 a.m. They believe the fire started in a shoe repair store and spread to the surrounding stores. Stores included a dry cleaner and a bar. 13 fire departments responded to the blaze. The fire is not under control yet. No injuries were reported.

John Bittrolff, a married father of two, is the lead suspect in the deaths of two prostitutes whose bodies were found within months of each other in late 1993 and early 1994, authorities said. Police arrested the 48-year-old, who was arraigned at the district court in Central Islip.
