Laundering Money: Criminals Use Tide in Place of Cash

Posted: Updated:

Tide Liquid detergent is such a hot commodity with criminals, it's even called "liquid gold."  Police say sometimes criminals are using Tide in place of cash,  and shoppers FOX 11 talked to aren't surprised at all.

"They're stealing tide and reselling for drugs and stuff like that... which is terrible and its easy to do that," said Jeania Jordan, who uses Tide detergent.

The San Bernardino Police Department confirms Tide, specifically the liquid detergent and the pods are commonly stolen and then traded for small amounts of drugs.

Then drug dealers will take the jugs of detergent and sell it at swap meets or laundry mats for less than in stores.

"I buy it its like 30 dollars its like 29 dollars a box," said Joyce Jordan, talking about the price of powder Tide.

"It is its very expensive, that's why they're doing it," said Jeania.

Some shoppers say the high price is exactly why they don't buy Tide, but criminals see it as an opportunity to sell the product for less on the black market.

The San Bernardino Police Department says they've seen the theft of Tide increase over the years, but the problem isn't isolated to that area, it's happening all over Southern California and the Nation.  In fact, laundry detergent is listed as the #2 most stolen item in the nation.
